Government to Begin Cotton Production-Nicaragua

The Government of Nicaragua recently announced the beginning of a cotton production project in the country’s northwest region, which will significantly foster the growth of Nicaragua’s textile and apparel sector.

The project, expected to begin in the second half of 2011, will be led by the Government of Nicaragua along with PRONicaragua, the official investment promotion agency of Nicaragua, the National Association of Textiles and Apparel (ANITEC, for its acronym in Spanish) and Brazilian investors.

The objective of the project is to foster the sustainable development of Nicaragua’s textile industry by supplying local raw materials. The production of cotton will also contribute to the vertical integration of the textile and apparel industry, strengthening the country’s value chain.

China Inflation May Top 6pc in June

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s inflation rate may accelerate to more than 6 percent year-on-year in June, which could bring the full-year consumer price index for 2011 to as high as 5 percent, a govt researcher said in remarks reported on Sunday.

Zhang Zhuoyuan, an economist at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a top government think tank in Beijing, said taming inflation would remain the priority in coming months. He called for faster steps to push real interest rates into positive territory and douse price pressures. The People’s Bank of China has raised interest rates twice in 2011 and many analysts believe it may raise them again soon in an effort to control inflation.

U.S. Apparel Retailers Must Look to Emerging Markets for Expansion as US Economy Continues to Stumble

As U.S. consumer confidence and the overall US economy continues an uneven recovery amid forecasts of a possible double-dip recession, U.S. apparel retailers must look to high-growth emerging markets to expand their businesses and increase revenues. This was a major conclusion of the Retail Apparel Index, an analysis by global management consulting company A.T. Kearney, that rates emerging markets for market expansion attractiveness.

Mike Moriarty, A.T. Kearney partner and co-leader of the study commented, “Emerging markets were impacted much less severely by the 2008 – 2010 recession, and these markets are now proving their sustainable growth. Apparel retailers must look to these markets as an important part of their strategy for growth.”

Textile, Clothing Exports May Fetch $15.49bn-Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, June 13: With rising cotton prices in the international market and depreciation of rupee, the government has projected that textile and clothing exports would fetch $15.490 billion in the fiscal year 2011-12, an increase that is expected to generate some additional employment for low skilled people.

In absolute terms, export proceeds of textile and clothing sector would record a marginal growth of five per cent next year, partly because of highest ever export growth by the sector in the outgoing fiscal year.

But contrary to this, Chairman, All- Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) Gohar Ijaz said that export proceeds from textile and clothing could be much higher from the government projected figures and could reach $20 billion next year if government facilitates exports.

Textile & Apparels Get Duty-Free Access into Malaysia-Bangladesh

Around 300 Bangladeshi products have been offered a duty-free access to the Malaysian market.

In its effort to position the country on the world map as Asia’s biggest shopping hub for the tourists, the Malaysian Government has annulled import duty on goods imported from Bangladesh, according to the officials of the Dhaka-based Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

Apparels, blankets, suits, table clothes, kids wear, bed spreads, curtains, lingerie, intimate wears, night wears and mosquito nettings are all included in the list of products which have been offered duty-free access to Malaysia.

Earlier, import duties on apparels and hats ranged between 5-20 percent, whereas duty on bed sheets, curtains, blankets and table clothes ranged between 10-20 percent.

In 2010, Malaysia had agreed to grant Bangladesh’s 19 exportable items a duty-free access to its market, provided Bangladesh agrees to begin negotiations on mutual free trade agreement (FTA).

Organic Fiber Giving Cotton a Run for the Money

Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc will sell its organic fiber to uniform maker Cintas which is trying to contain cotton costs.

Made from flax and hemp, NAT’s organic fiber was developed to compete with organic cotton, according to a company official.

NAT, based in Portland, Oregon, has similar agreements with Levi Strauss & Co LEVST.UL and HanesBrands Inc as apparel firms in the United States try to reduce escalating production costs after cotton surged to a record high over $2 per lb earlier this year.

“Cintas is the leading uniform brand in the U.S. and we are looking forward to supporting their manufacturing processes,” said Ken Barker, chief executive of NAT.

On Wednesday, Gap Inc Chief Executive Glenn Murphy said his company would cut back on the number of cotton vendors it deals with, and develop more direct relationships with mills as it tries to rein in soaring yarn and fabric costs.

This year’s rally in cotton prices has made NAT’s fiber a competitive alternative to normally produced cotton. It is cheaper on average by about 10 to 30 cents.

Protests Continue Over Shortage of Cotton Seed

WARANGAL: Angry farmers continued their protests in north Telangana districts on Thursday over shortage of cotton seeds. At some places, they pelted stones on the revenue offices and market yards. The ryots also burnt the effigies of ministers and staged rasta rokos on national and state highways demanding immediate supply of seeds.

The farmers staged rasta roko on NH-202 demanding Kanak variety of Mahyco brand cotton seeds. Farmers from 15 villages sat on the highway and shouted slogans against the agricultural and revenue officials. When they saw `no stock’ boards at the fertilizer shops, the ryots gave vent to their ire by targeting the tehsildar offices.

Consumers Expecting to Pay More for Apparel Provides Lift in Same Store Sales Forecast, According to Latest ForecastIQ® Analysis

A recent analysis of the ForecastIQ™ (a service from Prosper Technologies™) shows that a number of retailers may expect an increase in same store sales due to higher costs for apparel over the next 90 days, but it may not translate into increased profits. Since consumers expect to pay more for clothing, retail sales seem to be getting a lift but not for the right reason. Consumer confidence is down and consumer expectations are high when it comes to paying more for items such as fashion tops and denim jeans with 50.3% and 50.8% of American consumers expecting to pay more, respectively.Read

Soaring Wool Prices Make Suits a Luxury

It is like the butterfly effect, only in reverse. Tropical storms batter Australia, and you end up paying substantially more for a new suit.

Suit prices are expected to rise 10 per cent this year, a consequence of the doubling in the cost of wool.

Australia is the world’s biggest producer of wool. Last week prices rose to a record $14.85 (£9.05) per kilo. Large-scale flooding across Queensland and Victoria early this year caused an estimated $7.3bn (£4.8bn) of damage, leading to a dramatic slowdown in production. Globally, wool output is are at its lowest levels for 85 years. Growing demand for wool suits from increasingly wealthy Chinese businessmen has also contributed to the surge in prices.

Gap Cutting Cotton Vendors to Save Money

Gap Inc (GPS.N) will cut back on the number of cotton vendors it deals with and develop more direct relationships with mills as it tries to rein in soaring yarn and fabric costs, Chief Executive Glenn Murphy said on Wednesday.

Murphy also admitted at an investor conference that the clothing retailer made mistakes recently and said its flagship brand needs significant changes in North America.

Gap’s assumptions about the cost of goods for the second half of 2011 were too low and the company could have avoided some of the problems by buying more fabric earlier, Murphy said.

Prices of Fiber, Fabric, and Fashion

Pricing is very important to the fashion industry.  If our clothing price is too high, buyers will not make a purchase.  When negotiating pricing with a factory, the smart clothing companies do some research prior to their negotiations.  For example, if you are buying wool sweaters from a clothing factory, it would be a good idea to understand the pricing of wool fiber, wool yarn, and wool fabric.  From their you can more easily determine a fair price for a wool garment.

If you work in the apparel or textile industry it is important to have an understanding of textile fiber prices.  If you follow the fiber price, you can possibly buy fabric more effectively.  In turn this will help you produce clothing at a lower cost.

Google +1 Fashion Industry

This evening I have posted a technology article on the Apparel Search website.  The article is regarding the new Google +1 button system and how it is relevant to the Fashion Industry.

In summary, the Google +1 button is similar to the “like” button used on Facebook (also similar to the “like your style” method used on the Fashion Industry Network).  As per Google, “The +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out.” Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.”

New Shoe Store Opens in Soho : Ash

One of the fastest growing contemporary shoe and accessories brands, Ash, makes its way to America!  The first Ash U.S. store location opens today in New York City’s SoHo district at 44 Mercer Street.

Ashwas founded in 2000 from the passion and the knowledge of two great creative minds: Patrick Ithier and Leonello Calvani. Both with experience in the luxury shoe market, Ithier and Calvani worked for such top names as Charles Jourdan and Stephane Kelian. Their partnership was formed out of their mutual stylistic and commercial taste and a desire for edgy and unique contemporary footwear. Their shoes and accessories reflect their background in French luxury design, merged with Italian leathers and craftsmanship.

About Ash: Ash was founded in 2000 from the passion and the knowledge of two great creative minds: Patrick Ithier and Leonello Calvani. Both with experience in the luxury shoe market, Ithier and Calvani worked for such top names as Charles Jourdan and Stephane Kelian. Their partnership was formed out of their mutual stylistic and commercial taste and a desire for edgy and unique contemporary footwear. Their shoes reflect their background in French luxury design, merged with Italian leathers and craftsmanship. The philosophy of Ash was created on two main ideas: the selection of the distribution and the price competition, while creating cool unique products for fashion forward consumers. Ash shoes target the fashion conscious generation of men and women who travel to the style capitals of the world, always setting trends, never following them. The goal of Ash is to be able to grow the net of a single brand investing on the European market, but also expanding in Asia and the United States, a clear sign of the willingness of the brand to become the leader in contemporary footwear. After the great success of the boutiques in London, Paris and Barcelona, Ash recently opened the first flagship in Rome in Via Frattina 113 at the center of the capital. All retail stores carry a wide range of men, women and children’s shoes as well as other leather accessories.  Ash plans to expand its retail stores by opening two stores in August in Athens and Copenhagen, as well as additional store locations in Taipei, Milan, Seoul, and several other locations in the coming months.

You are welcome to discuss the Ash footwear brand and any other issue relevant to shoes at the Shoe Network.
