Ed Gribbin from Alvanon Named to AAFA Board

Ed Gribbin, president of Alvanon, Inc. (the apparel fit expert), has been named to the board of the American Apparel & Footwear Association. The announcement was made by AAFA President & CEO Kevin M. Burke at the AAFA Board of Directors Meeting, in conjunction with the AAFA Annual Executive Summit, March 13, 2013, Washington, D.C.

Gribbin’s appointment to the AAFA board reflects his 35 years of experience in the apparel industry, his global business background and his broad ranging involvement with worldwide apparel associations. He is co-inventor of the Intellifit Body Scanner and a member of eight leading institutions, including The Fashion Group International, the International Apparel Federation and the International Association of Clothing Designers and Executives. He is also a member of the Fashion & Apparel Studies Advisory Board of the University of Delaware.

“As an AAFA board member, I will be supporting and contributing to AAFA’s mission to represent the interests of U.S. apparel retailers, brands and manufacturers,” Gribbin says, adding that Alvanon, while only twelve years old is now working with the apparel industry in over 87 countries around the world. “Because of our broad, global industry reach, and our role in global supply chains, we have a unique perspective that I hope will allow me to add value to the AAFA Board and our members. And, because I have personally worked in just about every industry segment — wholesale, retail, manufacturing and now as a supplier and consultant to the industry, I think I have a clear understanding of what AAFA member companies need and want from their association.”

Gribbin was selected to introduce AAFA President Burke’s Opening Remarks at the AAFA’s Annual Executive Summit March 14 General Session. Gribbin’s comments focused on the positive changes to AAFA during Kevin’s tenure, including growth in its membership base, its member programs, its financial position, and its standing and influence on Capitol Hill.

Wealthiest Fashion Professionals

Bernard Arnault, CEO of fashion empire LVMH, has been toppled from his throne. In 2012 the man behind Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Céline still occupied the top slot as the richest man in the list of 200 wealthiest individuals in fashion, but he has had to pass the baton to Inditex CEO Amancio Ortega.

The owner of Zara, Bershka, Pull & Bear and Uterqüe enjoyed an increase in his fortune last year of almost 15.5 billion euros. This brings his capital to a total of 44 billion euro, with Orgeta on the fast track to becoming the world’s richest man. Telecom magnate Carlos Slim and Microsoft founder Bill Gates are the only ones still in the lead, but their companies experienced a less successful 2012 than Ortega’s Inditex.

Although Arnault’s LVMH also did well the past year, the top executive dropped to the third spot this year after reconfiguration of his net capital left him with a ‘mere’ total of 22.4 billion euros. The second position is occupied by the Brenninkmeijers, the Dutch family behind fashion chain C&A. Last year, they came in third, but this year they moved up a slot with a net capital of 26.7 billion euros.

A total of 43 British fashion entrepreneurs are included in the top 200 list. Topping the list at number 25 is Arcadia’s Sir Philip Green with a net worth of 3.8 billion euros, up from 3.2 billion euros last year. Despite the increase in capital, Green dropped one place. Michael Ashley of Sports Direct finds himself in 33rd place with a net capital of 2.7 billion euros, up 765 million euros from last year.

Other wealthy Brits on the list include Matalan’s John Hargreaves at number 41, the Ong family at number 67 with Club 21, River Island’s Bernard Lewis at number 68, the Pentland Group’s Stephen Rubin at number 77 and Fashion Manufacturing’s Richard Caring at number 93.

A newcomer to the top 50 is jeans magnate Renzo Rosso, founder of Diesel and owner of the labels Viktor & Rolf and Maison Martin Margiela. He occupies the 36th slot with a net capital of 2.3 billion euros.

The highest ranking female on the list is also Italian and the same as last year: Miuccia Prada of Prada and Miu Miu, conquering 11th place with a net capital of 9.6 billion euros.

The Top 200 reveals that fashion has been growing faster than ever, despite the recession. The total value of the Fashion Top 200 List of wealthiest fashion executives now amounts to 420 billion euro, an increase of 11.6 percent compared with last year.

“Nothing speaks more to convention in the design of a wedding gown than structure. Certain fabrics have become synonymous with this type of gown, providing form yet still able to be manipulated with precision to the desired design.

Duchess satin and satin-polyester blends are the most well-known of structured fabrics and are ideal for A-lines, full or gathered skirts, mermaid shapes or a structured bustier. Some of my brides seek more volume, so I recommend they choose taffeta (which looks lavish in off-white) or organza.

One of my favorite fabrics for structured looks is tulle, which is no longer relegated to the underpinnings of a gown. Tulle is charming and beautiful, expressing a sense of youth and femininity; it is not ideal, however, for dancing or moving about. -XO, Vera”

Do you wish to keep your wedding look sensual or casual, but still celebratory? My suggestion is to choose a gown with soft construction, which means the fabric you select is critical.

For understated yet elegant, I recommend silk crepe and crepe blends; these fabrics are versatile in terms of draping, embellishing or tailoring and perfect for featuring elaborate accessories, special jewelry or extravagant flowers.

For daring and provocative, I recommend silk charmeuse; one of the most glamorous and luxurious fabrics, it was a favorite of Hollywood sirens such as Jean Harlow. However, silk charmeuse as well as jersey and chiffon are body-conscious and therefore not suitable for every bride. For a more forgiving yet still softly constructed fabric, choose a gown made of georgette.

In all fabrics, a narrow cut always strikes a nice balance between moods. -XO, Vera

The Fashion Education Network

The Fashion Education Network, part of FashionUnited, launches the first International Fashion School Database which includes comprehensive information about fashion schools and educational programs worldwide.

Responding to the growing need for information by students and companies; contributing to a more transparent global educational market. The Fashion School Database is the world’s most complete database which includes information about top fashion schools and their courses.

Big names in the education industry such as Polimoda, IFA Paris, LDT Nagold, Mod’Spe, EBC Hochschule, IFM Paris and FDI Düsseldorf are partnering with the Fashion Education Network.
As an international institution of which 40% of the students are non-French, IFM thinks it is important to be present at the Fashion Education Network” states Lucas Delattre, Head of communication at IFM Paris.

The database now comprises information about more than 400 fashion courses and programs from 75 schools worldwide. In the next couple of months over 70.000 people will choose to start a fashion course for the upcoming semester. PHOENIX FASHION WEEK COMES TO L.A.

March 12th, 2013 (Mon.) – 4pm @ Fashion Biz Inc. in Downtown L.A.

Greetings, my name is Brian Hill, Executive Director of Phoenix Fashion Week, where we are focused on “Bridging Designers & Buyers.” We are currently planning our next Phoenix Fashion Week, running October 1 – 5, 2013.

Each year we travel to cities and host fashionable “Meet & Greets” to introduce our http://www.phoenixfashionweek.com team and potentially INVITE designers, models, retailers, etc. to be a part of our Fall Fashion Week in Arizona. These hand selected (12) emerging designers (15 established designers & (10) accessory designers will showcase on our 80ft. Runway and be exposed to our retailer database to write order.

EMERGING DESIGNERS: Will actually go through our ‘Designer Boot Camp’ remotely, in the (4) months leading up to Phoenix Fashion Week.
