Winter 2012 is Here. What to Wear?

Winter didn’t show in most parts of the country for 2011-2012, but it seems to be coming on strong this year. Now consumers are likely wondering – what should I wear? SnowSports Industries America (SIA) spent the past six months hosting seminars, attending fashion shows and line presentations, while studying the snow sports industry’s latest trends to give consumers a heads up on the latest fashions for the slopes and streets during the wintery months ahead. Apparel A luxe note will be found in many styles this winter, catering to women’s sense of individual style. Consumers will see metallic accents, fur trim and non-traditional snow sports fabrics, such as denim and ultra-suede. Brighter colors in pants have taken over for basic black with pop colors such as green, purple and bright blue in women’s outerwear. For the kids – electric pastels for girls and bright patterns for boys will be strong trends this season.

Snowboard apparel will reflect a nature-inspired and hunting-themed color palette featuring muted jewel tone accents and camouflage. Consumers can also expect to see menswear-influenced fabrics in patterns such as plaid, corduroy and tweed; workwear-inspired and military uniform styles are also going to be popular this season. Women can expect to see a more tailored fit in their snowboard outerwear with urban-centric trends, along with plenty of bright color statements.

To address the growing number of riders who want outerwear to appear more like streetwear, many brands are blending street style with technical features and fabrics in their hoodies, flannels and lightweight shells.

Consumers will also see many varieties of the puffy jacket with technical aspects including lightweight compressible, water and tear resistant qualities and traditional down combined with high-tech materials to prevent over-heating.

Accessories Hats Big trends in hats will include slouchy beanies with full-fleece lining, providing style on the outside but technical function on the inside. Brimmed hats for women and oversized pom-pom hats, which have been popular for a couple seasons, will continue as well. Multifunction hats will also be popping up, which double as a neck warmer and a hat.

Goggles/Sunglasses Goggle companies are rolling out all the stops when it comes to integrating data storage and display technology, while providing better goggle and helmet compatibility.Sunglasses will feature popping colors and better eye protection. New lens and fit technologies continue to surface, helping drive the category; metal frames, specifically aviator versions, will continue to stay strong into 2013.

Gloves/Mittens Manufacturers of mittens and gloves are incorporating many new technologies, melding fabrics and improving touch-screen technologies for electronic use.

Baselayers Snow sports enthusiasts are always looking for new baselayers in fun, bright colors and prints. Sweater-designed baselayers are bringing back vintage ski style and everyday lifestyle pieces have double-duty technical features.

Annalise Tran Fashion Designer Introduction

The story of how Sacramento fashion designer Annalise Tran got to where she is today is almost as intriguing as the clothes she creates. The Middle child of five sisters, Annalise was born in war torn South Vietnam; where her father served in the military protecting his country from communist invaders. One fateful day Annalise’s father was captured and imprisoned by Northern Vietnamese forces and held in a Communist prison.

Upon hearing this her Mother bravely took her five children and fled to Hong Kong, there they met a Christian emissary who sponsored the family and brought them to the United States, it was 15 years later that Annalise she saw her Dad again.

With the hope of a better life Annalise’s Mother started a Bridal Boutique in their new home. After college Annalise worked in the boutique, firstly doing bridal make up, learning depth and tone, then as a store buyer, going to bridal markets and gaining an insider education in the world of design and sales. Annalise became fascinated by the designs, the details and shapes, the fabrics, the colors, she was continually amazed at how one dress could flatter a woman to make her sexy or elegant and change her whole persona.

At the Store Annalise was constantly bothered by the amount of women who would walk out of the store discouraged, after finding the dress of their dreams and realizing it is out of their price range, so she became inspired to create her own designs at an affordable price for women of all ages.

-A brave decision as Annalise had no training in design or sewing, so undeterred she set about teaching herself, every night she would work tirelessly, making mistakes and correcting them until she created her first complete dress; a short pink feather for the younger generation. The dress was a hit and a year ago she set up her own online store:

Katy Perry Rally Dress Liked by Obama

Katy Perry has been on the campaign trail for President Obama and along the way she has started her own trend of political dress wear. The pop star has donned dresses with ballots, slogans, American flags and Obama’s head over the past few weeks. Most recently, the pop star wore a blue rubber mini dress with the slogan “Forward” at a rally for President Barack Obama in Milwaukee.

“Extra’s” Renee Bargh caught up with Perry, who commented on her fashion statement saying. “I’ve always said I’m a sucker for a theme, so if you give me the President as the theme I make these crazy dresses,” adding, “I’m just excited to be able to exercise my civic duty.”

Katy told Renee The President even gave the ensemble his stamp of approval, telling her he, “liked it a lot.”

Katy, who also introduced Obama to her 91-year-old grandmother at the Milwaukee event, got props from the President. “I am grateful to her,” he told the crowd, for “working so hard these past few weeks.”
