GenArt Fresh Faces September 2012

The 2012 Fresh Faces in Fashion program featured Spring 2013 collections from women’s and men’s ready-to-wear designers Anne Sofie Madsen, Amanda Lew Kee, Chloe comme Parris, COMEFORBREAKFAST, Gretchen Jones and accessory designer A-morir. This year’s Fresh Faces also featured designer Katungulu Mwendwa from Kenya selected from this year’s GenArt Global program that launched in May. Moroccanoil worked closely with the designers to create their runway hairstyle looks with special emphasis on hair trends for Spring/Summer 2013. The event was also sponsored by VOGA Wine.

Trade Union Equity: New Model Guidelines Proposed

It’s starting to seem like every time Fashion Week rolls around, the industry makes a lot of noise about self-regulation regarding models’ health and age, while the girls — and they are girls — remain as young and skinny as ever.

Tomorrow, however, the British trade union Equity is meeting to suggest new rules that are, at least, specific.

Here’s what they’re proposing:

  • A maximum ten hour work day.
  • Mandatory meals. Now, if only there was a way to make sure everyone else on set didn’t shame the models for eating said meals.
  • Covered expenses for work-related travel over ten miles.
  • “Respect and dignity toward models at all times” — this should already be a rule, but seems difficult to enforce in reality. And just the fact that it has to be spelled out is worrisome.
  • No drastically altering a model’s appearance unless it is agreed to. Remember the bleached brows trend a few seasons back? Yeah, we felt bad for those girls, too.

Earnest Sewn and Peter Som Collaboration Floral Fusion

This fashion week The Earnest Sewn Co. joined forces with acclaimed fashion designer Peter Som for a special edition denim collaboration for Spring 2013. The partnership played on the brand’s contrasting qualities: Earnest Sewn’s rebellious nature and Peter Som’s refined designer’s touch.The line blossomed from Peter Som’s poppy runway prints and incorporated Earnest Sewn’s renowned denim techniques such as pigment coating and laser-dye processes. Earnest Sewn’s Creative Director, Ben Talley Smith said, “the collaboration has pushed our team to work with silhouettes outside of the traditional five pocket realm that we know and love, so that in itself has been exciting for us.”

Designer, Peter Som noted that he’s “thrilled to partner with The Earnest Sewn Co. The fusion of my runway prints with their expertise in denim has resulted in a very exciting collaboration. Lord & Taylor hosted an extremely successful “Fashion’s Night Out” event at its Fifth Avenue flagship September 6, 2012, with thousands of shoppers making their way to the store in five hours.

Lord and Taylor Project Runway Collection

August 30th on Project Runway, Lord & Taylor announced the launch of the first-ever Project Runway Collection. Exclusive to Lord & Taylor, the collection is comprised of cocktail and evening dresses that represent the best of Project Runway’s past ten seasons, with one dress created by a notable designer from each season. The winning dress for season ten, created by designer Christopher Palu, was revealed during last the August 30th episode.

The collection is now available on LordandTaylor.com and will also be sold at Lord & Taylor’s Fifth Avenue flagship store beginning Thursday, September 6th, in time for Fashion’s Night Out.  The dresses retail for $350 and under.

LONDON EDGE September 2012

Storming first day at London Edge and The Ledge, a buzzing energy filled The National Hall at London Olympia. With a set reminiscent of an old time musical hall, the London Edge Catwalk Show provide theatrical entertainment that heated up the runway. Long black cloaks and leather trousers gave a strong matrix-like feel, while blonde bombshell’s dressed in little plaid skirts and thigh high stockings teased the crowd with their performance.
London Edge Original and London Edge Fashion includes over 150 brands such as ‘steampunk’ inspired shoes by Hades and leather cuffs and collars from Blackrose World. First time exhibitor, Geek Cycled, uses vintage game pieces to create mini wearable memorabilia. They also use cuttings from old comics to create everything from coasters and plates to bracelets and cuff links, some which come in a personalised jewellery box decoupaged in the same comic strips.
Unique underwear brand, Smuggling Duds, had their own SD Superheroes dressed up and sporting the garments outside their full body costume. Dynamic duo Bionik Funk are two members of the team, who joined us at London Edge today. These break dancer’s have taken the stage on Britain’s Got Talent and have been featured on Sky One’s Got To Dance.

for Style and Personality

There was a time when specialty underwear was the domain of women. Not anymore!

“It used to be that the old standby, ‘tighty-whities,’ was a man’s all-purpose underwear. They were worn with business attire, sweat pants for tooling about the house or shorts while playing a pick-up basketball game, but they weren’t ideal for each function,” says Darnell Jones, a sports-playing business professional and creator of TUKZ Undergarments.

“Now, a man’s underwear says something about who he is, whether it’s a serious businessman, an athletic weekend warrior or a romantic. Let’s be honest – your grandfather’s underwear probably didn’t look the coolest, and it certainly didn’t say much about him.”

Manufacturers are responding to men’s desire for products, including underwear, that cater to his lifestyle with style and functionality, Jones says.

He points to these hot new undies:

• Saxx: This brand debuted in 2006 as a very specific kind of athletic undergarment for men. The apparel features comfortable side panels, which create a hammock-like effect for genitalia. No more chafing!

• SPANX for men: The underwear famous for shaping women, including Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow, released its men’s version in 2010. Recognizing a burgeoning market for guys who want a GQ look, SPANX offers men the same comfortable firming and smoothing as women get.

• TUKZ: Like many of today’s specialty underwear, TUKZ features a 3-D pouch for comfort and an enhanced profile. But the primary defining innovation is how the underwear improves business attire, Jones says. The underwear is equipped with four elastic straps and clips to neatly secure tucked shirts for a crisp, professional appearance all day. “The idea came to me organically – by necessity,” Jones says. “I got so sick of having to tuck my shirt back in after sitting and standing dozens of times a day at the office.” When men let their tucked shirts flare, it makes their midsection look thicker, he says.

• $100-dollar underwear, various brands: Yep, it’s happened!
Brands like Calvin Klein, featuring the “Frigo,” are capitalizing on men’s desire to be just as sexy as the women in their lives – or almost. Consumers are routinely paying more than $50 for sexy men’s underwear at retail stores in malls nationwide.

“Whether you want a clean silhouette at work or safety and comfort when you’re on the athletic fields, you can choose the proper undergarment for the purpose,” Jones says.

The Artisphere will allow NOVA Fashion Week to upgrade its event with a number of production and audio/visual amenities. The Artisphere a brand new urban arts center serves as the multi-level venue for this captivating event.
