If you are involved with technology, you most likely have heard about HTML5.  However, you may not have heard about the new HTML5 Developers network website.

The HTML5 Developers website has been designed for the sole purpose of educating members of the technology community regarding the benefits of utilizing HTML5. The learning on our social network takes place in what many would consider a rather simplistic way. Essentially, the educational process occurs during a question and answer type environment. The formula behind this approach is completely simple and predictable. Basically, people with “questions” ask their questions. People that know “answers” to questions, hopefully answer the questions.

JCP Helps Returning Vets with New Apparel

J. C. Penney Company, Inc. and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation’s first and largest non-profit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, are joining forces to provide America’s newest generation of military veterans with more than $1 million in apparel and footwear to start new civilian wardrobes. With over two million servicemen and women who deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, the “Welcome Heroes” campaign seeks to honor and support recent vets with the apparel needed to pursue new career opportunities or to enjoy the leisure activities missed most at home.

To be eligible, military service members who served in Iraq or Afghanistan can go to therucksack.org from Oct. 20 through Nov. 20 to register for the jcpenney giveaway once they have confirmed their free membership with IAVA at iava.org. Following the registration period, over 6,000 qualified entries will be randomly selected to receive $200 in merchandise certificates toward the purchase of men’s or women’s apparel available at jcpenney or jcp.com. As the retail destination for all Liz Claiborne® and Claiborne® branded merchandise as well as modern career wear options from Stafford®, J. Ferrar®, IZOD, JOE Joseph Abboud®, Worthington®, American Living and East 5th®, veterans will be able to choose from a broad selection of suits, tailored clothing and casual sportswear.

To showcase jcpenney’s stylish assortment of professional and lifestyle attire, jcpenney featured real veterans to model for its “Matters of Style” mailer and captured behind-the-scenes footage from the photo shoot. Through video diaries posted on jcp.com/welcomeheroes and stories highlighted in the mailer, veterans share their deployment experiences by recalling some of the things they missed most from home and the importance of outfitting returning veterans with new clothes.

Ukrainian Fashion Week Features Paris Hilton Modeling

Ukrainian Fashion Week attracted the glances of the international haute couture fashionistas for the 29th time. The catwalk by American celebrity Paris Hilton and gala show of renowned British-Italian designer Antonio Berardi added a special thrill to the occasion. The event featured 42 designers, who presented their pret-a-porter Spring-Autumn 2012 collections.

One of the highlights of the event was a catwalk by Paris Hilton, who demonstrated a bright yellow silk dress by the Ukrainian designer Andre Tan. “The 29th UFW is remarkable for featuring high scale collections as well as attracting a large number of foreign guests,” noted the Head of the UFW Organizing Committee Iryna Danylevska.

The 29th season of the show featured collections by 42 famous Ukrainian designers, showcasing works of Lilya Poustovit, Victoria Gres, Elena Burenina, Alexei Zalevskiy, Viktor Anisimov, Tatyana Zemskova, Elena Vorozhbyt, Liliya Litkovskaya, Svetlana Bevza, Christina Bobkova, Andre Tan, Iryna Karavay, and many others. “Participation in UFW enables designers to present their new collections …and helps them prove their credibility to the market players,” commented the General Producer of the UFW Volodymyr Nechyporuk.

Ashley Greene Representing DKNY and DKNY Jeans

DKNY and DKNY Jeans have tapped Ashley Greene for an exclusive one-year agreement to represent the brands in its advertising campaigns. Ashley Greene, best known for her recurring role as Alice Cullen in the Twilight film series, will also serve as the brands’ ambassador.

Ashley Greene said, “I’ve always loved Donna Karan’s creations. To be a part of the brands’ message is incredibly exciting because it feels like such an organic fit. It’s easy to talk about how these clothes work for my lifestyle, whether I’m in New York, L.A. or traveling for work.”

Greene first wore Donna Karan to a Berlin premiere of Twilight Eclipse in June 2010. In July, Greene hosted Super Saturday in the Hamptons where she wore DKNY. In September 2010, the house invited Greene to attend the designer’s Spring show. Most recently, Karan designed a custom gown for Greene to wear to the 2011 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum. A friendship and collaboration was born. The relationship between the actress and the fashion house came about naturally.

Uniqlo Starts U.S. Store Expansion

Note the following from a Reuters news report from earlier this month, “Fast Retailing Co Ltd’s, Uniqlo is launching its U.S. expansion this week with the opening of a flagship store in Manhattan that will anchor a global push to rely less on its home market of Japan.

In addition to the Fifth Avenue location, opening on Friday, Uniqlo is also opening a store in New York’s Herald Square next week, bringing its U.S. total to three locations. The new stores will be the chain’s two biggest.

The retailer’s goal is to eventually have 200 stores in the United States and U.S. sales of $10 billion by 2020.

Uniqlo, run by Japanese billionaire Tadashi Yanai, is directly challenging rivals such as Spain’s Inditex SA (ITX.MC), Sweden’s Hennes & Mauritz AB (HMb.ST) and U.S.-based Gap Inc (GPS.N) with stores a stone’s throw away from theirs on Manhattan’s major shopping strips.”

Specialty Fabrics Industry Loses as Congress Passes KORUS FTA

The U.S. specialty fabrics industry, a thriving textile sector in the U.S., took a direct hit Wednesday when the House and Senate majority voted in favor of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (KORUS).

Under the win/lose terms of KORUS, South Korean goods will immediately enjoy duty-free entry into the U.S. market; but U.S. exports to South Korea will still be subjected to a 10 percent Value Added Tax (VAT). Through its VAT system, South Korea will be allowed to maintain what amounts to a permanent 10 percent tariff on U.S. exports to their market.

Moreover, South Korea has complete freedom to raise its VAT rate above the current 10 percent at any point in the future. According to Ruth Stephens, Executive Director of the United States Industrial Fabrics Institute (USIFI), “It was a major error on the part of U.S. negotiators not to address this inequity as part of KORUS, as border taxes are a persistent example of foreign practices that place domestic companies at a competitive disadvantage.”

Just Double It Is Nike Plan in China

The renowned sporting goods brand Nike aims to double its revenue in China in the next four years, an ambitious plan that it hopes will leave competitors in the dust.
The following information from the USA China Daily website.
“I think China is probably more important than anywhere else in the world,” said Charlie Denson, president of Nike Brand, an affiliate of Nike Inc.

“We will be pretty aggressive as we continue to look at the expansion of our distribution.”  Nike has been active in the Chinese market for 30 years, with sales surpassing $2 billion in the 12 months to May 2011.

Nike products are available at more than 7,000 stores in China, which is the brand’s second-largest market after the United States.

US Renews ATPA, GSP Trade Preference Schemes

According to a recent news article at http://www.mrketplace.com/20816/us-renews-atpa-gsp-trade-preference-schemes, “Along with the passage earlier this week of legislation to implement the long-awaited free-trade agreements with Colombia, Korea and Panama, the US Congress has also renewed two other trade preference programs.

The Andean Trade Preferences Act (ATPA) and the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), both of which expired earlier this year, have been extended through July 31, 2013.

The move means that under the ATPA, US apparel imports from Andean countries Ecuador, Colombia and Peru will enter the US duty-free if they use US cotton, yarns, and fabrics. The GSP also which provides duty-free treatment for goods produced in developing countries.”

At the mega-retailer’s 18th Annual Meeting for the Investor Community event this week, Walmart U.S.’s chief merchandising officer Duncan Mac Naughton cited a boost in basics across the board – merchandise assortment, price and in-store message – as one of Walmart U.S.’s tenets in its effort to improve business and streamline expenses.

Year 5 of Baltimore Fashion Week is underway

Butterfly Productions has started the production phases for its annual event Baltimore Fashion Week. Baltimore Fashion Week 2012 will be a 3-day event instead of its normal 4 – 5 day event. Baltimore Fashion Week-end (BFWe) is scheduled for Friday, August 17, 2012 through Sunday, August 19, 2012.

In the past years, I have listened to the guests and participants of this event and have decided that Baltimore Fashion Week-end (BFWe) 2012 will be a 3 day event. This way guests can attend the event and still have time to spend time with family and friends. The shows will start at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012 and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2012 and Sunday, August 19, 2012,” stated Nixon, President/CEO of Butterfly Productions.

The event schedule for the 2012 has been increased to include a black tie affair on behalf of the scholarship fund. Also added to the event schedule for 2012 is the Emerging Designer Competition which is open to middle, high school, and college students nationwide. Registration for the Emerging Designer Competition ends February 1, 2012.

Baltimore Fashion Week likes to express its commitment to implementing new and groundbreaking programs to encourage and facilitate creativity as it lives and breathes in the fashion industry,” stated Jaclynn Ashley – President of LuvHerStyle PR.

The designer participation level has also been redesigned to allow designers a level of creative expression for their collections. Designers will now have the option of providing models, and suggest hair and make-up looks for complement their collection.

In a move towards a more conducive and comprehensive fashion week production, we thought it would be a nice touch to finally allow designers an option to express their sense of creativity on our runway by providing his/her own models and also providing suggestive looks for hair and make-up. We think this will be a huge success and look forward to the creativity process,” stated Nixon.

In 2011, designer Laurie B. Allen presented her collection in BFW2011. Laurie was the first designer to represent the designer exchange program between BFW and Little Rock Fashion Week (LRFW). This fashion initiative will continue in 2012, when one lucky designer from BFW2011 will showcase in LRFW2012.

Designers selected for panel review are: Parisa Keywanfard; Travis Wilcox; Rhonda Allen; Kim Dixon; Wyntress Hill; Cat Reinheimer; Richard Jones; Omoyeni Makinde; June Monteiro; and Charmaine Dyson Nious.

In September 2012, Butterfly Productions will submit a selection of designers for a single consideration for placement into Nolcha Fashion Week to participate in the “Collective Runway Show.” The chosen designer will have access to a state-of-the-art venue; professional lighting; professionally built catwalk; professional surround sound; and several other amenities to properly produce a runway event.

Since the birth of BFW, I have always wanted to sponsor a designer for Nolcha Fashion Week. After speaking with a dear friend he reminded me of my beginning wish and inspired me to bring my dream to reality. His words to me were what are you waiting for just do it! So, with that push it will be done in 2012 and will be each year after that,” stated Nixon.

Just incase you missed her recent comments, Vera Want stated the following in a recent news letter.

Looking for a modern take on the bridal bouquet? There are noteworthy alternatives that, like a traditional bouquet, embody the beauty and the ritual of the wedding. I find a wrist corsage – small and graceful – to be a chic accessory as well as a practical alternative. A pinned corsage is elegant and incredibly flattering for a high-necked or off the shoulder gown (but pay careful attention to proportions here).
