Freddie Fox visiting St James’s for Definate White Shirt

World-renowned actor Freddie Fox celebrates The Definitive White Shirt in St James’s. Freddie, currently starring opposite Rupert Everett in Neil Armfield’s production of The Judas Kiss appeared in a crisp white Jermyn Street shirt with an elegant backdrop of window displays designed by the shirt makers of St James’s to celebrate the definitive white shirt.

Freddie Fox

St James’s is home to the famous Jermyn Street, which boasts the highest number of world renowned shirt makers on one luxury shopping street, offering the best quality shirts worldwide. According to Richard Harvie, owner of Harvie & Hudson, “The white shirt remains the best seller in St James’s”. At Turnbull & Asser nearly half of all shirts sold, both ready to wear and bespoke, are white.

Popularised by the likes of award winning films James Bond, The Great Gatsby and television series Downton Abbey, the St James’s shirt makers offer a huge variety of white shirts, in the highest quality of cloths. Every design element of the shirt including collar, cuffs, buttons, shape and fit can be created to the specification of the most discerning gentleman. The secrets to many celebrated icons’ stylish looks come from their visits to the area from all over the world to have their shirts personally crafted.

A white shirt is synonymous with a message of virtue, precision and power; a bespoke white shirt from Jermyn Street can enhance and define the physique, allowing the shirt to fit all proportions perfectly, even taking into account the size of your watch. Customers often discover that after experiencing a made to measure shirt for the first time, they continue to invest in bespoke. Damien Whitmore the Director of Public Affairs and Programming, Victoria and Albert Museum says, “The white shirt represents the foundations of a man’s wardrobe and has been for centuries. It seems like such a simple item, but the details are what make it the very epitome of style and elegance.”

Each St James’s shirt maker has their own signature design, for which they are known. A shirt exhibiting a three-button cuff is a trademark look of Turnbull & Asser; a ready to wear version of this shirt costs £145. Mother of Pearl buttons complement Emma Willis’ signature look for £290. Emmett’s signature shirt, at £95, is made using Baby Twill White, a weave known for its soft texture that becomes even more supple over time. In contrast, Budd’s distinctive shirt, £115, is made of white poplin two fold cotton with a classic Budd forward collar. New & Lingwood’s signature style involves a curved collar ending in a point, allowing the collar to lay properly on the upper breast bone, and costs £95. Harvie & Hudson’s iconic shirt is the plush and luxurious white Herringbone and a white ready to wear version costs £64.50. Favourbrook’s 1850’s Victorian Morning Wing Collar Dress Shirt at £90 has an accentuated high collar and emphasised wing lapels that create a stunning effect when paired with a silk cravat. Along with the medium weight white cotton poplin, covered buttons and French-cuffs, the straight cut tailoring creates an elegant profile. Hilditch & Key’s bestseller is the Carlton with their classic collar and double cuff, made with the finest two-fold cotton poplin and real shell buttons.

Royal Warrant holder Stephen Quin from Turnbull & Asser believes that “Every man should have at least three white shirts in their wardrobe”, with the best accessory to complement the white shirt being a silk tie.

Gregory Westbrook and Nick Fouquet, co-founders of the super tendy Westbrook Hats, arrive in the store looking for inspiration for their next collection. Jascmeen pulls out a selection of hats so Doris can show different types of hat making techniques. Sharing knowledge about the history of fashion is a big driver for Doris. Heather Lawton Debut Collection at NYFW

Canadian native designer Heather Lawton made her New York Fashion Week debut this season. Showing for the first time, Lawton’s Fall/ Winter 2013 presentation was held on Thursday, February 7th at Studio 450. Attendees, including singer Neon Hitch, entered a beautiful winter wonderland, the ideal backdrop for the collection’s dark and somber fairy tale.

Heather Lawton conceived her Fall/Winter 2013 collection with a dark and bewitching tale in mind: an entirely glamorous woman pushed into the carnivorous clutches of winter’s barren landscape. The collection featured edgy dresses, separates, knits, and luxurious outwear, with equestrians accents, studs, and exposed zippers. Using exotic materials such as stingray, fine leathers, plush wools, and furs, Lawton employs a palette of deep cobalt, navy, and hot pink to evoke the raptures of winter. Lawton’s winter accessories and signature hoods serve as glamorous shields against the elements of nature. A special line of jewelry “Heidi Gardner for Heather Lawton” will also be featured in the line. With a nod to Lawton’s gothic aesthetic the collection is the elegant woman’s escape from the bindings of everyday life. This season was styled by Jules Wood, with shoes provided by Frye. Beauty looks were created with hair by Jon Reyman lead stylist for Aveda, and makeup by John Jones lead artist for Face Stockholm. Also provided was liquor sponsored by Legend of Kremlin.

Heather Lawton’s Fall/Winter 2013 presentation was on Thursday, February 7th from 2:00 PM-‐3:30 PM at Studio 450 at 450 West 31st Street, between 9th and 10th avenue.

ABOUT HEATHER LAWTON: Native to a region in Canada rich in natural elements, Heather Lawton’s design aesthetic strongly nods at her once lush surroundings with an urbanite futurist attitude inspired by her New York surroundings. Lawton’s creative process for her collection begins with sourcing the most luxurious fabrics. Allowing her design mediums to tell their own story, Lawton slowly drapes on the form paying close attention to detail and a clean finish. Her method of garment construction is rooted in time spent with her mother learning to sew and knit — origins reflected and strengthened throughout her brand. An ardent equestrienne in her teens, Lawton later emerged as the ‘dark horse’ of her Parsons: The New School for Design class, debuting her Fall/Winter ’11 Collection during Toronto Fashion Week. Lawton has gained much attention for her interspersing of fine silks, lace, and cashmere with textured textiles such as goat hair, Mongolian lambs wool, crocodile, and python. Heather Lawton is sold at Church in Los Angeles and ODD in New York.

The Lanesborough – With its enviable location, situated on the borders of Knightsbridge and Belgravia, in the heart of London and with panoramic views of Hyde Park, The Lanesborough has long been considered one of the world’s most luxurious hotels. Its elegant surroundings, exquisite cuisine, unsurpassed attention to detail and world-renowned service are second to none. The hotel’s restaurant, Apsleys, a Heinz Beck Restaurant, was awarded its first Michelin star in February 2010.

Beulah London – Aside from creating beautiful designs, Beulah London is a fashion label with a conscience. Many of its items are created and sold in order to provide a sustainable livelihood to victims of sex trafficking in India. Such items have been either made by a victim or created specifically to raise funds and awareness. With each beautiful garment that you buy, there is an equally beautiful change happening somewhere else in the world, something that Beulah like to call their butterfly effect. From autumn/winter 2013, all items made under their Butterfly Label will have a logo embroidered on the inside back in order to further express their brand story.

Boutique clothing company debuts eco-friendly clothing and accessories for a cause

GreenLinebyK, a grass-roots clothing boutique based out of Mashpee, MA, is rolling out their new spring line on Monday, January 28. In addition to the handmade, eco-friendly clothing, they are launching PARTICiPATE, a charity-based campaign which will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity/Cape Cod through all-organic t-shirt sales.

Sophisticated and playful, the women’s spring collection appeals to all different types of fashion tastes. From urban to bohemian, designs are polished yet comfortable and are crafted primarily from cotton and linen.

“The inspiration for this collection was earth and the female form”, says owner and designer Kathryn Hilderbrand, “I’m not locked into any particular style or trend. I tend to lead more toward colors of nature. My designs are made with comfort and practicality in mind and tend to be more timeless than trendy. Bohemian to urban – I’ve covered it all. Linen and cotton are the focus.”

Additionally, beginning now through April 24, 2013, $3 from each PARTICPATE tee sold will go directly to help support Cape Cod’s local Habitat for Humanity and are designed to bring awareness to Habitat for Humanity International’s BUiLD campaign. Tees retail at $27 and are made from 100% organic cotton.

The online boutique will also carry fair trade accessories from a handful of artists which will benefit the Starfish Organization, an organization for women in China rescued from slave trade. Founded in 2006, the organization shelters marginalized women and provides them with counseling, medical funding and vocational classes and training in wholesale and jewelry production to set them up for long-term success.
