Yoga Fashion Helping Sea Turtles

September is National Yoga Month. In recognition of this special month, certified yoga instructor Nicole Sherman is launching HonuYoga.com. This new website features an all-natural line of original T- shirts for the stylish yogi who also cares about environmental issues and animal well-being.

Nicole received her teaching certification in 2010 on the Big Island of Hawaii where she practiced yoga on the lava rocks of Kona and swam with the dolphins and majestic sea turtles (honu).

Sherman says, “That experience was my inspiration for creating beautiful, comfortable, custom yoga T-shirts that honor and benefit the endangered sea turtles in Hawaii. Sea turtle numbers have been reduced because of poaching, fishing gear injuries, pollution and ingestion or entanglement in marine debris. These threats are becoming too much for the marine population to handle – and protection of these beautiful creatures is of paramount importance.”

Nicole began selling T-shirts out of the trunk of her car and literally off her own back, as yoga enthusiasts resonated with her messages. Now Honu Yoga T-shirts can be found in yoga studios throughout southern California – and if her myriad of supporters have their way – ultimately around the world.

“I caught the ‘yoga bug’ after being diagnosed with scoliosis at an early age and wanted to utilize the best tools to create harmony and balance for my body,” explains Sherman. Her quest to understand anatomy and alignment principles, and her affinity for holistic modalities, led her to deep physical, emotional and spiritual gratification from practicing yoga. Personally inspired by its transformative benefits, she now teaches yoga to others in private and studio groups.

The artistic flair behind Nicole’s T-shirt designs comes from her diverse background in art and theater. She has a degree in Fine Arts and Theater Set Design from Florida Atlantic University and is the creator of Nicole Erin Designs, a customized mural and design company.

Signs of Lower Inventory for Holiday 2011

Cargo traffic at the nation’s busiest seaport complex declined in August compared with the same month in 2010, suggesting that the sluggish U.S. economy has caused retailers to order fewer goods to sell this holiday season.
The data suggest that the sluggish U.S. economy has caused retailers to order fewer goods to sell this holiday season.
Imports through the Port of Los Angeles fell 5.8% to 376,190 containers compared with a year earlier. Exports through Los Angeles surged, however. They jumped 24.8% to 184,232 containers compared with August 2010. At the neighboring Port of Long Beach, imports dropped 14.2% to 267,198 containers and exports fell 3.8% to 121,277 containers, compared with a year earlier.
“Retailers appear to be somewhat cautious going into the holiday season,” said Phillip Sanfield, spokesman for the Port of Los Angeles.

Esprit Plans Exit of US and Canada

Personally, I do not fully understand the strategy.  However, it appears that Esprit plans to exit the USA market.  Below you will find portion of the details from a CBS news article.
“Clothing company Esprit Holdings Ltd. is looking to return to the popularity it once had with shoppers during the 1980s, with plans for a major overhaul of its business that includes exiting the U.S. and Canada.

The Hong Kong-based retailer also said its earnings for fiscal 2011 dropped 98 percent.

Aside from leaving North America, Esprit announced Thursday that it will shut down 80 unprofitable stores, which includes retail operations in Spain, Denmark and Sweden.”

Uzbek Cotton Being Boycott by Global Clothing Brands

More than 60 of the world’s top clothing labels, including Burberry and Levi, are to boycott cotton from Uzbekistan over claims the government forces children to harvest the crop.
Swedish high street retailer H&M, and sportswear companies Adidas and Puma were among the brands who pledged not to buy cotton from the former Soviet Central Asian country that they know has been collected by children.
The groups have signed a pledge under the Responsible Sourcing Network, a project organized by the US-based advocacy group As You Sow which is organizing the boycott.
US retail industry group American Apparel and Footwear Association, which represents more than 800 companies, had previously signed up for the pledge but Andrew Behar, Chief Executive of As You Sow, said the new individual pledges had extra significance.

Is China Losing Edge as Low Cost Manufacturer

China may be losing its edge as the world’s cheapest place to manufacture goods, a new report suggests.
The report by consultants KPMG says that minimum wage levels in China are now four times greater than other places in South and South East Asia.
Indonesia and Bangladesh are benefiting as rising costs in China force firms to switch production, the report says.

Cotton Futures Soar on Irene Storm Damage to U.S. Crop

Reported on September 8th, 2011 by the Wall Street Journal,  “Cotton futures jumped to their highest point in nearly two months as storm damage to southern U.S. cotton fields added a new layer of worry over the size and quality of this year’s domestic crop.  Cotton for December on Intercontinental Exchange delivery rose 3.8% to $1.1034 a pound, the highest settlement price since July 8.”
