The Men of Rachel Zoe Speak

The Men of Rachel Zoe Speak : Style is Personal but Taste Isnâtâ

1012_jeremiah_single“The Rachel Zoe Project” consistently showcases why Rachel Zoe is the top celebrity stylist in Hollywood. Just as the trends in fashion change, so does Team Zoe. On this season of “The Rachel Zoe Project,” Zoe hires longtime friend Joey Maalouf and newbie Jeremiah Brent as her new stylists.

Zoe went through a public separation from her styling assistant Brad Goreski. Goreski told Zoe he wanted to spend more time with his boyfriend, but soon after leaving reportedly started going after Zoe’s clients.

Zoe was faced with the daunting task of replacing Brad. However after much contemplation, Zoe went with her gut and brought on Jeremiah Brent. After weeks of working for Team Zoe, Brent’s job is in jeopardy as Zoe and husband Rodger Berman try to find his place in the company.

Jeremiah’s background is in interior design, not styling. Throughout this season, he’s constantly had to prove himself in the fashion world; in his first week he was flown to New York to work on a showcase for Zoe’s own line. As if Brent didn’t have enough to worry about, he also has to deal Joey Maalouf, who’s skeptical of his styling ability.

Joey Maalouf is Rachel’s sassy and charismatic best friend, as well as personal hair and makeup stylist. During the show Maalouf risks it all and moves from New York City to Los Angeles with ambitions to work more closely with Zoe.

In an interview with TooFab’s Anthony Dominic, the newest members of Team Zoe, Jeremiah Brent and Joey Maalouf chat about competition in the workplace and even man tans. Check out the exclusive interview below:

TooFab: In your opinion, who is currently the best and worst dressed in Hollywood?

Joey: Worst: Everyone on “The Jersey Shore.” I can’t even believe people put them on a list. Their style is so fab, because they’re really true to themselves, which is what I love, but I don’t consider that fashion.

Best: Gwyneth Paltrow, Margherita Missoni, Anne Hathaway and Kate Moss. Naturally Paltrow has great style, on a day to day basis when she’s not with her stylist or on a red carpet. I love her style!

Jeremiah: Worst: Julianna Margulies at the Emmys. I didn’t know what was going on. It looked like her dressed was leaking, I just didn’t get it and I’ll never understand. It was like ice cubes were coming out of the dress and I didn’t know what to do. I felt uncomfortable; it was like her dress was crying. Worst dressed is hard because style is so personal, but taste isn’t. Sometimes I don’t know what is going on with these people. I’ve never seen the Jersey Shore so I can’t say, but they’re very tan.

Best: Cate Blanchett, I love Anne Hathaway obviously, Blake Lively’s style takes a risk sometimes and I love it, Zoe Saldana is another favorite, I think she looks amazing.

Joey: I’m so obsessed with being tan!

TooFab: If you had to get rid of everything in your closet except one piece what would you keep?

Joey: Oh that is a really hard question! Can I keep more then one thing? I have this slightly sheer black cashmere v-neck that literally fits me amazing and I’ve had it for about 8 years and I can’t get rid of it. It’s a really simple black Gucci cashmere sweater. My second item would be really slouchy black pants. I could be naked and wear a black piece and be fine.

Jeremiah: I have this vintage Ralph Lauren denim shirt that I wear probably more than I really should. I wear it almost every other day on the show, but it’s the one piece I don’t think I could get rid of. It’s like home to me. I am such a lesbian! Dior are my favorite jeans ever, and I have a pair that are 4-years-old and they are perfect and worn-in and I don’t thing I could give up those. So I’ll just be in a denim suit for the rest of my life!

TooFab: Now that you’re living in L.A. are you happy you made the change?

Joey: Oh my God, yeah! I feel that in New York you’re focused on working and networking and being out. You are constantly on the go and always around people. It’s funny but I don’t think I spent one second looking in the mirror or caring about what I looked like. I just threw on my basics everyday and my boots so I was comfortable running around the city. Now that I live in L.A. I feel like there is such a calm energy here and I have so much time to work out and eat well and take care of myself and walk around. That alone just gets me a good tan, and I do think the transition is great. I will always love New York and it will always be my heart but I am having a really good time enjoying the calm energy in Los Angeles. Most importantly I live right down the street from Rachel so I get to spend so much time with the baby, which is really exciting!

Looking for Designer Duds on a Budget

Looking for Designer Duds on a Budget? The “Fashion Hunters” Know the Secret!

1012_karina_singleWho doesn’t love a great bargain, especially when it comes to those sought-after designer duds? Bravo’s new reality series “Fashion Hunters” follows four fashionistas of the Second Time Around consignment shop in New York City as they scour the town for high-end fashions for those of us on a budget.

TooFab caught up with star Karina Lepiner who gave us the skinny on the joy of finding a good deal, what trends are hot for Fall, and how you too can turn your closet into cash.

TooFab: How long have you worked in fashion?

Lepiner: I have actually never worked in fashion, I just have always had a liking, a fashion sense, which I picked up from my mother. She is a fashionista, a very classic and sophisticated woman. She indirectly taught me how to dress and what to like, how to find the quality of clothing without the snobbery.

TooFab: What was your career before?

Lepiner: I used to work in the hospitality industry for Intercontinental Hotels, I ran the housekeeping department. I like to work with a lot of people, it was exciting for me. I’ve gone through the years where everything’s about your kids and I loved that, but I had had enough of that and it was time to do something fun and for myself.

TooFab: Is it hard to balance motherhood and a career?

Lepiner: No, it all came around at the perfect time. I have a 9-year old daughter and 6-year old son. They were in school all day. That’s how I fell into getting a job at Second Time Around. I felt the whole atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for. It’s a fun place to come and shop and be creative. It didn’t have a stuffy feel to it, and the clientele that come in are much more gracious, they ask you for collections, for styling help, and I felt that was where I wanted to be at that point.

TooFab: How long have you worked at Second Time Around?

Lepiner: I’ve worked at Second Time Around for a little over a year, part-time.

TooFab: Have you shopped there?

Lepiner: All the time, I shop everywhere all the time, I just like to find a deal. I love consignment shops, it’s a great way to find original things that were not in the department stores. That was my big pet peeve. I would go to department stores and pick something that 25 other people picked, but at these consignment shops I would find original items.

TooFab: What is the best purchase you’ve made at a consignment store?

Lepiner: I have purchased magnificent Fendi coats, original pieces that I think maybe they hit the runway and that was it. I’ve found Christian Louboutin shoes at such great deals, and for me that is what the thrill of shopping in consignment stores is all about. I love finding affordable things and finding that great deal. It’s just as exciting as walking into Barneys and finding Jil Sander boots and being like ‘I have to have this right now.’ With the times the way they are, it’s more fun for me to get that deal, rather than just getting the high from that one purchase. Sometimes I’ll see a shoe at a store and I will say to myself, that shoe is going to end up at a consignment store.

TooFab: What is the most expensive thing that has come through the doors of Second Time Around?

Lepiner: We get a lot of furs, especially at our Upper East store. We get a lot of fun and fabulous costume jewelry from Jennifer Miller which is very expensive. We get really contemporary but high end clothing — every now and then we bring in Oscar de la Renta, Jean-Paul Gaultier, we have had a couple of those pieces. You name it we have it, but as fast as it comes in is as fast as it slides out.

TooFab: What is the coolest thing you have seen at your store?

Lepiner: I go bananas over accessories. We had an amazing Missoni jacket that came in and I just fell in love with it. We’ve gotten kind of cool converse sneakers, street stuff, which I think is super cool. I think it’s when we get the Christian Louboutin shoes we all go crazy. I am just waiting for the rhinestone Christian Louboutin shoes to come in.

TooFab: What is the craziest in-store experience you’ve had?

Lepiner: I haven’t had a “crazy person” come in, but I have had very eccentrically strange people who are trying to sell me things that don’t work. We know from experience it is not going to sell, then you end up making no money when you could make 10-15 dollars [by selling it] somewhere else. We have people who sell street jewelry, or people who get offended that we haven’t taken their clothing. We get irate people who storm out of the store. It’s New York City, so we get all walks of life.

TooFab: What tips do you have for people to sell clothes?

Lepiner: My advice is to make a little cash and turn over your clothing, give us stuff that you would still wear but you know you’re done with it. Basically, when you’re cleaning out your closet, if you haven’t worn it in a year or two, then you’re not going to wear it again. Generally, things that you don’t like are not going to do well.

TooFab: How do you determine the price?

Lepiner: We usually like to price a third to a quarter of retail value. We will research that and try to get it close to a quarter of what it was when it was sold. But if someone brings us something new, we will price it at about half of that. It’s tricky, we like to do the research and get the pricing as close as possible.

TooFab: What is the biggest misconception about consignment?

Lepiner: I think the biggest misconception is that people think you’re buying thrifty and dirty clothing. With our store, we take in things as well taken care of as possible, as clean as possible. We even ask for things to be dry cleaned, so we really stick to that criteria. I think you should give Second Time Around a chance. We have laundered clothing that’s clean. It’s often that you will find brand new clothing that we sell for half the price.

TooFab: What are the top trends for the upcoming season?

Lepiner: We have a lot of different looks coming out which makes it so much fun. I love my Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes, I am so excited that they are coming back. Really for me, it’s about the fur and how they are still holding strong. I see a lot of fur and fur trims. [A] favorite right now is the bright colored J Brand jeans, the blues and the red. I am a big fan of Elizabeth and James, they are probably my favorite right now.

Taiwan to Resume Duty Refunds to Boost Exports

In an October 6th, 2011 article on MarketWatch, they reported, “Taiwan’s government will resume and expand its duty refund program for imported items to seven local industries to help increase Taiwanese exporters’ competitiveness amid global economic uncertainties, the government said Thursday.

The program, which is also known as a duty drawback, will resume later this month after a domestic economic boom prompted the government to gradually suspend the program since 1984 to reduce administrative costs.”

Knitwear Exports May Fall on Dyeing Unit Closures

According to a recent article in the India Times, “Tirupur Exporters Association said Knitwear exports from Tirupur are likely to decline by Rs 5,000 crore at Rs 12,000 crore due to the closure of dyeing and bleaching units following zero discharge issues.

Due to the processing problem since January, the exports could be in the range of Rs 11,500 crore to Rs 12,000 crore this year, sustaining last year’s exports, Tirupur Exporters Association ( TEA) President A Shaktivel told PTI.

This is not due to an increase in quantum of exports, but because of the increase in garment prices, he said.

“Prices of garments have gone up by about 18 per cent, which shows increase of exports in value terms. However, in terms of volume, there has been no increase. Considering the demand, exports could have easily been in the range of Rs 18,000 crore if the situation was normal,” he claimed.”

Sandblasting Jeans Possible Danger to Workers in Bangladesh

According to France24.com, sandblasting has long been banned in Europe and the United States, but Bangladesh’s cheap-labour garment factories still use it to condition jeans for top western brands.

Gucci, Levi’s, H&M and Gap have all vowed to stop selling sandblasted products, while Dolce & Gabbana has been targeted in an Internet campaign to take a similar stance. “One day, when I was working, blood started gushing out of my mouth and nose,” Howlader told AFP from his hospital bed. “They told me the work was safe. But the constant sandblasting made the room fill up with dust and sand. You end up swallowing and inhaling a lot of it.”  Howlader fired high-pressure sand at denim jeans with just a cloth mask for protection, treating 200-300 pairs in a ten-hour day. “Sandblasting is booming here,” said Kalpana Akhter, general secretary of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity, which records many silicosis-like symptoms among workers in the sector.

Easy Spirit

Easy Spirit, a division of The Jones Group Inc. (NYSE: JNY), announced today that it has unveiled a regional campaign that celebrates the heritage of the Easy Spirit brand by helping women live their lives in comfort. As part of the campaign, the brand recently unveiled the newest addition to its Anti-Gravity collection, the Parnella pump. The collection kicked-off with the launch of an online campaign, in-store signage and flash mobbers who danced in the streets of New York City to “Pump up the Jam,” wearing the Parnella pump.

Easy Spirit’s Anti-Gravity collection features a technology that contains millions of nitrogen-filled micro-bubbles that provide superior cushioning and help make the shoe lightweight. An expanded Anti-Gravity collection debuted in 2010 and includes styles from several product categories, including: athletic, dress, casuals and boots.

“A classic pump is a must-have in every woman’s closet – especially this Fall. The new Parnella pumps and the ‘Looks Like A Pump, Feels Like A Sneaker’ campaign capture the essence of the heritage commercial Easy Spirit is most known for – women playing basketball in pumps,” says Amy Rapawy, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Easy Spirit.

“One of our goals for the Anti-Gravity technology was to find a way to incorporate it into dress styles to create not only the ultimate comfort pump, but a comfortable pump that looks great, and we think we succeeded. The flash mobs were a fun way to create excitement around the Parnella pump, while giving a nod to our heritage, and inspiring women to come into our stores to experience our many comfort and style-driven footwear solutions, like Anti-Gravity,” says Mark DeZao, Executive Vice President, Easy Spirit.

What is your curve?

What is your curve?  You better figure it out before you purchase your jeans.

Levi’s® brand designers studied body scans of more than 60,000 women to develop custom fits based on the difference between the measurement of a woman’s hip and seat – the greater the difference, the more curvy the body – and include:

Slight Curve – designed to celebrate straight figures
Slight Curve is designed to define a woman’s waist, while accentuating her curves. If jeans fit in the hips and thighs but are too tight in the waist, a woman should try the Slight Curve.

Demi Curve – designed to fit even proportions
Demi Curve is designed to flatter a woman’s waist, while smoothing her shape. If jeans usually fit in the waist, but don’t flatter the figure, a woman should try the Demi Curve.

Bold Curve – designed to honor genuine curves
Bold Curve is designed to hug the waist, without gapping or pulling. If jeans fit in the hips and thighs, but gap in the back, a woman should try the Bold Curve.

Supreme Curve – designed for the curviest woman
Supreme Curve is designed to sit lower in the front and higher in the back for coverage that  truly enhances the shape of a curvy body.  If jeans fit in the hips but the waist is too low in the back, a woman should try the Supreme Curve.
